Wesley Carl Moran, of Daviston, Alabama, passed away on May 5, 2026. He was 61.
He was born on January 27, 1965, in Alexander City, the son of Leon Merritt Moran and Odean Moran. At four years old he entered the Alabama School for the Deaf in Talladega, graduating in 1985. From there he went on to Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., where he played college football and found himself among a whole world of people who spoke his language.
For twenty-four years, from 1996 until his retirement in 2020, Wesley worked at the Alabama School for the Deaf. He spent much of his life as an evangelist for Deaf people. Wesley was patient with the hearing, generous with his time, and quick to teach anyone willing to learn how to sign. Any deaf person who needed something he had was welcome to it, without ceremony.
Wesley was among the most pleasurable men you could ever hope to spend an afternoon with. He loved a good meal, a cold Coca-Cola Classic, and Alabama football. It’s hard to say which he loved most. He hunted deer from a truck over bait and ate deer steak with gravy and biscuits. Wesley never stopped missing his mother, and was the only one who could get her chicken stew just right.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon Moran and Odean Moran Keel. He is survived by his daughter and the great joy of his life, Emily Ann Moran; his sisters, Lori Moran Carlisle and Ginger East Burton (Eddie); his nephews, Nic Carlisle, Owen Carlisle, George Carlisle, Len East (Corryn), and Talmadge East; his niece, Lydia East Kenney (Jonathan), and their families; and an expansive number of friends, former students, and comrades who were lucky to have known him.
The family would like to thank healthcare workers, friends, family, and ministers for their assistance, care, and prayers throughout Wesley’s illness.
Radney Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Wesley Carl Moran.
