Walter, a beloved educator, devoted family man, and passionate historian, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2023, at his home in Alexander City, Alabama after a brave battle with cancer. Born on December 3, 1945, in Montgomery, Alabama, Walter lived a life marked by intelligence, adventure, and passion.
Walter was the proud son of his loving parents Dr. Joe and Elizabeth Warwick Gowan and grew up alongside his sister, Barnette "Bee" Worpell. He carried the values of hard work, compassion, and intellectual curiosity instilled in him throughout his life. He was a proud alumnus of Marion Military Institute and served in the United States Navy. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Huntingdon College, and a Masters Degree from Troy University. His pursuit of knowledge did not end with his formal education but continued throughout his lifetime, particularly in his interest in South Eastern Native American History and Culture.
For over 30 years, Walter served as an educator at Benjamin Russell High School. He was more than a teacher to his students; he was a mentor, a coach, and a friend. His intelligence and passion were infectious, inspiring countless students to pursue their interests and dreams. He also coached the Benjamin Russell Golf Team, sharing his love for the sport and instilling in his players the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
Walter was a devoted family man who loved his family more than words can express. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Gowan of Alexander City. Their bond was one of deep love and mutual respect, a relationship that served as a pillar of strength for both Walter and Carol. Their children, Jonathan Seth Gowan (Sallie) of Montgomery and Elizabeth Frances Gowan of Auburn, were the pride and joy of Walter's life. His love for them was immeasurable, and he instilled in them the same values he carried throughout his life. He is also survived by his beautiful sister, Barnette "Bee" Worpell.
Walter was a man of many interests, but his passion for South Eastern Native American History and Culture was especially profound. He spent countless hours researching, studying, and sharing his knowledge with others. His adventurous spirit led him to explore historical sites and participate in reenactments, further deepening his understanding and appreciation of the culture.
Walter's passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. However, the memories of his love, his intelligence, his passion, and his adventurous spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He lived a life full of purpose and passion, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of his students, his family, and his community.
In remembering Walter, we honor a man of integrity, intelligence, and unwavering commitment to his family, his students, and his passions. His life serves as a testament to the power of education, the importance of family, and the value of pursuing one's passions. Walter Earl Gowan may have left this world, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him.
