Mrs. Robert "Bobbie" Dean Lightfoot Abernethy's Obituary
Robert “Bobbie” Dean Lightfoot Abernethy, 95 years young, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2015. All of her immediate family affectionately called her Two Mama.
Born January 26, 1920 to Robert Hoffman Lightfoot and Anne Dean Lightfoot, she was raised in Alexander City, Alabama. Her childhood was very important in defining her life as she recounted wonderful, memorable stories about it her entire life. She made her childhood come alive for her family. She attended Huntington Women’s College for one year and transferred to the University of Alabama where she pledged Alpha Delta Pi and graduated in 1941. She was a proud Alabama alumnus and loved watching Alabama football games. She met and married William Hubert Abernethy in 1941. They had two children, William Dean and Celia Anne and lived in Akron, OH, Atlanta, GA and finally settled in Birmingham. Two Mama (“Two”) was a loving, supportive wife who instilled strong Christian values in her children and epitomized the term, Steel Magnolia. She lived her life by the instructions Jesus gave Peter to build religious life on a rock. Two was a rock of stability to her two children, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Two lived her life to the fullest and never gave up; there was no circumstance or obstacle that was too difficult to overcome. She was a strong woman who lived by example. Two loved baking chocolate chip cookie pies with her grandchildren (and eating them) and made potato salad that was truly second to none. She always enjoyed her time with family and maintained a keen interest in all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren up until her passing.
She is survived by her sister, Celia Coley, her daughter, Celia Griffin, her daughter-in-law, Marcia, her grandchildren, Dean (Michelle), Richard (Richard), Kevin, Patrick (Erin) and Anne, her great grandchildren, Dansby, Culver, Celia, Wills and Henry. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hubert, and her loving son, Dean.
Two Mama will be buried at the City Cemetery, Alexander City, on April 17 at 11 am. Reverend T. Michael Morgan will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dogwood Veterinary Specialty Hospital, 5918 W. Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23230, where her granddaughter, Dr. Anne Abernethy, is an emergency veterinarian.
