Oscar Paul Thompson, a cherished pillar of strength and love, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024, in Alexander City, Alabama, at the age of 84. Born on June 1, 1940, in Clay County, Alabama, Oscar was a man of profound faith, integrity, and generosity, whose life was a testament to the power of kindness and dedication.
Oscar's journey began in the Mountain Community where he was raised and later attended New Site High School, graduating with the class of 1958. His thirst for knowledge and self-improvement led him to Southern Union State Community College, and he ultimately graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Textile Management. Oscar's professional life was marked by a successful career as an insurance agent for Independent Life and Liberty National, from which he retired after years of dedicated service.
Married to the love of his life, Martha Janett Kennedy Thompson, for an inspiring 62 years, Oscar was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his daughter, Angela (Jerry) Culpepper, and son, Jeff (Diane) Thompson. His grandchildren, Dr. Zach (Jordan) Thompson and Dr. Olivia (Daniel) Henderson, as well as great-grandchildren Alice, Wickham, and Charlotte Thompson, will carry forward his spirit of compassion and joy. Oscar's brother, Eric Thompson, along with a host of nieces and nephews, also survive him. Preceding Oscar in death were his parents, William Abb and Zula Thompson, as well as his siblings Joel, Duel, Elmer, L.V., Winford, Malvin, Braxton, Verda Thompson McDaniel, Willie Merle Thompson, Jeanette Thompson Howard, Mary Thompson Vinson, and Margaret Thompson Jones.
Oscar's love for the Lord was the cornerstone of his existence. A faithful follower of Christ, he exemplified what it meant to be a godly man through his actions and words. As a humble servant, he was a longtime and devoted member of Orr Street Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and fulfilled many other roles with grace and humility. His favorite Bible passage, Romans 8:28-29, guided him through life's triumphs and trials, always reminding him of the divine purpose in all things.
The love Oscar had for his family knew no bounds. He prioritized their well-being and happiness above all else, embodying the roles of a loving husband, father, and grandfather with every fiber of his being. His generosity extended beyond his family, as he sought to meet the needs of others before his own, never uttering a bad word about anyone. Oscar's heart was as open as his hands, always ready to give and uplift those around him.
Those who knew Oscar will remember him for his infectious sense of humor, his grateful and giving nature, and the warmth of his presence. He was happiest sitting on his back porch, rocking in his chair, taking in the beauty of nature and counting God's blessings. His laughter and joy were as abundant as his faith, and his spirit will continue to light the way for all who had the privilege to know him.
Oscar's life was a living example of the words that best described him: loving, faith-filled, and generous. His impact on this world was immeasurable, and his memory will be cherished by all who were touched by his kindness and unwavering spirit. As we say goodbye to Oscar Paul Thompson, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a soul eternally at peace.
