Jane was a dear friend and choir companion. For many years, I sat between Becky Brooks and Jane. She towered over my 5’2” self, but that didn’t matter to Jane. The three of us were an alto “team” on the front row. Louise was there too, making it a foursome.
Jane has a granddaughter named Grace. She never let me forget. Every time we sang the word “Grace,” she punched me in the ribs, as she did every time I missed a note or came in too soon.
I have a Joan Rivers necklace that Jane fell in love with. It is what you would call a “statement” necklace with a lot of clear crystals and is a special occasion piece of jewelry. Jane wanted to borrow it to wear for a family wedding. When she came to pick it up, I had a number of necklaces spread out on my bed, but but did not include the one she wanted. It was in my pocket. I told her I wasn’t sure what she was looking for, but she could pick it out. After not finding it, she became visibly frustrated insisting there was another. I made her sweat a bit, and pulled it out of pocket. She wanted to kill me. She wore it and said she received many compliments. The next time I saw her at choir, she said it was a hit, and only one of the crystal streamers fell off with part of the crystal flower, but it is still perfectly good to wear. She returned it fully intact, of course. I’m sure there is a picture of Jane with that necklace. I would cherish a copy.
That was Jane always having fun. The last time I saw her at Chapman’s, she was very weak physically, but not in spirit or mind. She was the same old Jane and just wanted to talk. I will miss her so much.
