Mrs. Betty Merchant Nix's Obituary
Funeral Service for Mrs. Betty Nix, 97, of Alexander City, Alabama, will be Friday, December 19, 2025, at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church Alexander City. Dr. Skip Lowery will officiate. Burial will follow in the Shelby Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at First Baptist Church Alexander City.
Mrs. Betty Merchant Nix, affectionately known as Betty to her friends and family, peacefully passed away on December 9, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on July 17, 1928, to Murray Merchant and Ozella Armstrong Merchant. Betty's life was a testament to her generous spirit, sharp intellect, and unwavering faith. Her warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
A proud graduate of Ensley High School in 1945, Betty's journey continued as she married the love of her life, James Leon Nix, in 1948. The couple initially settled in Birmingham, Alabama, but soon moved to Wilton, Alabama. Eventually, they made their home in Montevallo, Alabama, where they spent the most cherished years of their lives together. After the challenges of Covid in 2020, Betty spent most of her remaining years in Alexander City, Alabama, surrounded by the love and care of her family.
Betty's talents in the kitchen were legendary, known far and wide for her delectable peanut brittle and homemade rolls. Her culinary skills brought joy to countless family gatherings and community events. Beyond her cooking, Betty was an avid crocheter, creating numerous afghans with love and care, each stitch a testament to her dedication to her craft. These handmade gifts were treasured by those fortunate enough to receive them.
Betty's Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and providing comfort through life's trials and tribulations. She lived her faith through her generosity and service, always willing to lend a hand or offer a kind word.
Betty was the beloved matriarch of a large and loving family. She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Teresa) Nix of Fulton, MS, Mike (Alice) Nix of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Jim (Karen) Nix of Pearl, MS, daughter, Nancy (Bud) Lilly of Alexander City, Alabama, and son, Sam (Gina) Nix of Montgomery, Alabama Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Heather (Lionel) McCormick, Richard (Tyler) Nix, Daniel Lilly, Chris (Jennifer) Nix, David (Anisha) Nix, Jackson (Ali) Lilly, Steven (Virginia) Nix, Samantha (Ryan) Smith, and Rachel (Dustin) Ratliff.
She was preceded in death by her father, Murray Merchant, mother, Ozella Merchant, beloved husband, Leon Nix, grandsons Adam Thomas Nix and Philip Austin Nix, and great-grandson Jackson James Lilly.
Mrs. Betty Merchant Nix lived a life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of giving. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of her family and all who knew her. Her presence will be deeply missed, yet the impact of her life will continue to be felt by the many lives she touched. Betty's journey on earth has ended, but her story will be told for generations to come, a tale of a woman whose strength, love, and faith were as enduring as the afghans she so lovingly crafted.
