William Douglas Jones, known affectionately as Douglas or Honey, was a beacon of light and a pillar of strength to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Born on July 15, 1941, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, Douglas lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his community. On August 4, 2024, at the age of 83, he passed away peacefully in Clay County, Alabama, surrounded by the love of his family.
Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Patricia Yates Jones; his daughters, Lacrecia Kay (Edward) Thomas and Michelle (Ed) Moon. He was the cherished grandfather of Cairisti Britton (Derrick Pickett), Mirandy Kate Britton, Michette Adale (Tiffany) Moon, Sarah Melinne (Mike) Mancinelli, and Vivian MeKae Moon (fiancé JC). His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Peyton George Mancinelli, Livie Mae Mancinelli, Georgia Kate Pickett, Cora Ruth Pickett, McKinley Mills, Carley Mills, and Annesley Mills. He will also be fondly remembered by his brothers, Paul (Romonia) Jones, Donald (Linda) Jones, and David Jones. Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Mary Sue Jones; his brothers, Edward Eugene Jones, Denson Jones, and Homer Lynn Jones; and his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Jones and Gailya Sanford.
Douglas served in the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After discharge, he was educated as an electrician through the GI bill. Later in his career as an instructor, he earned a bachelor's in Adult Education from Athens, Alabama.
With a passion for education and technology, Douglas devoted over 30 years as a college instructor at Southern Union State Community College. There, he taught Industrial Electronics and excelled as the Director of Technology. His expertise and commitment to education also led him to serve as a consultant to Auburn University, where his guidance and knowledge were highly valued.
Douglas's interests were as rich and deep as his character. He loved his family immeasurably and adored his girls and grandchildren, always taking the time to listen and offer his wisdom. As a longtime and faithful member of Old Providence Baptist Church, he served the community in many capacities, including Music Director, Treasurer, Sunday School teacher, and committee member. His dedication to his faith was unwavering, and his contributions to the church will be remembered by all.
Beyond his church, Douglas was an active volunteer with the Tallapoosa Baptist Association for many years. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always ready to lend a hand or an ear to anyone in need. Known for his ability to fix anything, he often helped others with both practical problems and personal ones, always with a patient and giving spirit.
In his leisure time, Douglas found joy in gardening, delving into a good book, and conducting genealogy research. He traced his family's roots with the same meticulous care and attention that he applied to every aspect of his life.
Words that best describe Douglas are faith-filled, loving, and generous. He embodied these qualities in every interaction and will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
Douglas Jones's life was a testament to the values he held dear-family, faith, and service to others.
