Sherry passed away on June 27, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on July 9, 1949, in Alexander City, to Buddie and Polly Bennett, Sherry was a graduate of Benjamin Russell High School (class of ’67), where she played saxophone in the BRHS Marching Band and was a member in Art Club, FHA, Christian Youth Club, Student Council, Drama Club, National Honor Society, and Math Club. Moving to Florida, she pursued and completed a degree in interior design from Florida State University where she was a member of the ΑΟΠ sorority. After graduation from FSU, Sherry moved to Atlanta where she met and married Charles Chalker. Spending her professional life in retail sales at Rich’s Department Store and later as a business partner with her husband, she was always passionate about what she did and for whom she did it. Her husband of 38 years, Charlie preceded her death and was her perfect match. Best friends, and quite opposite from each other, they supported each selflessly for the other’s gain and were a testament to the commitment of marriage.
Sherry possessed a unique sense of humor, a self-confidence that eludes most, and a passion for all things creative. She appreciated the time spent with family, friends, good food, and a glass of wine. Most famous for her green thumb, she had many convinced she could grow roots from rocks.
She will be remembered for the special love she shared and for the life she lived.
She is survived by her sister, Shelia Bennett Sheldon of Hendersonville, NC; brother, Robert Danny (Jackie) Bennett of Alexander City; nieces Karen (Alan) Milton, Lea (Christian) Bryson, and Jessica Bennett; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Buddie and Polly, and her husband, Charles Chalker.
Radney Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Sherry Dianne Bennett.
