Samuel Richard "Sammy" Reaves' Obituary
Memorial service Mr. Samuel Richard “Sammy” Reaves, age 74, of Alexander City, will be Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Duncan Memorial Methodist Church. Rev. David Sherrell will officiate.
Mr. Reaves passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at Russell Medical. He was born on May 2, 1950 in Opelika, Alabama to Clyde Reaves and Lois Harrison Reaves. Sammy was a longtime member of Comer Methodist Church.
Sammy dedicated several years to his hometown as a respected police officer in Opelika. Known affectionately as the "Hat Man," Sammy had a unique passion for selling hats at flea markets and trade days, a hobby that reflected his charming personality and his love for connecting with people. His warm smile and friendly banter were as much his trademarks as the hats he sold, making him a beloved figure at these gatherings.
A devout man, Sammy was a longstanding and active member of Comer Methodist Church. He poured his heart into helping with the annual Christmas Day lunch, a tradition that has since been lovingly named the Love Like Jesus Christmas Day Lunch. His dedication to this event was a testament to his faith-filled and loving nature, as he believed in spreading kindness and joy, especially during the holiday season.
Sammy's enthusiasm for life was evident in his unwavering support for the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Atlanta Braves. He bled crimson and white, and his voice was often among the loudest cheering for a home run or a touchdown. His passion for sports was matched only by his love for Southern Gospel music, which he enjoyed following ardently, attending concerts, and celebrating the joy that this music brought to his and others' lives.
Those who knew Sammy will remember him as a man of integrity and generosity. The words "selfless," "faith-filled," and "loving" were not just descriptors but the principles by which he lived his life. He touched the hearts of many through his kindness and unwavering support, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire.
Sammy is survived by his two sons, and a host of friends who will miss his jovial spirit and gentle presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, who raised him with the love and guidance that he would later share with the world.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Love Like Jesus Christmas Day Lunch Organization, 9395 Elkahatchee Road, Alexander City, AL 35010.
Radney Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Samuel Richard Reaves.
