Samuel E. Avery, known to family and friends as Sam, passed away on June 24, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama, at the age of 70. Sam was born on January 23, 1956, in Alexander City, Alabama, to George Avery and Inda Baker Avery, where he spent his early years and formed the roots of a life marked by love, loyalty, and devotion to the people around him. He carried those hometown values with him throughout his life and remained deeply connected to the community and the family he cherished.
As a Christian, Sam lived with faith and a quiet strength that guided him through life’s joys and challenges alike. Sam was a loving, friendly, and adventurous man who was known for his warm spirit and easy way of making others feel welcome. He enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life meaningful, including cheering for Auburn football, following NASCAR, working in the yard, and playing his guitar. He especially treasured time spent with his family at Lake Martin, where many happy memories were made. Above all, he loved his grand babies and found great joy in being part of their lives. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and encouragement to those who knew him best.
He is survived by his wife, Mary “Kim” Avery of Alexander City, Alabama; his son, Derek Avery; his son, Adam Avery and Addy; his grandchildren, Lliam Scott, Camden Avery, Layla Avery, and Silvio Rex Avery; his sister, Jennifer “Johnny” Pasley; his mother-in-law, Shirley Price; his brothers-in-law, Jeff Price, Thomas Price and Angie, and Todd Price and Misty; special friend, Tommy Sponburgh (Bobbie); and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a family who will continue to carry forward his memory with love and gratitude.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Patsy Cotney; and his father-in-law, Billy Ray Price. Their memories remained close to his heart, and he now rests in the peace of their eternal embrace. Those who knew Sam will remember a man whose life was defined by devotion to his family, his faith, and the many everyday moments that he made special. He had a way of bringing people together, whether through a shared conversation, a day on the lake, a song on his guitar, time spent outdoors tending to the yard, or riding his motorcycle. He was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved, and his family was the center of his world.
Sam’s legacy is one of kindness, steadfastness, and love. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, his devotion as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and the many ways he enriched the lives of those around him. Though his passing leaves a deep void, the memories he created and the love he gave will remain a lasting comfort to all who were blessed to know him. A life well lived is never truly forgotten, and Sam Avery’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
