Mrs. Ruth Overton Stroup passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024 at her home. Born on March 4, 1935, in Fyffe, Alabama, she was the daughter of David J. Overton and Lottie Mae Carroll Brooks. Ruth was raised on a successful farming ranch that was owned and operated by her parents and grandparents. She finished school and went on to hold several jobs that included working for a local pharmacy, department store, and owning and managing a clothing store. She met and married the love of her life, James A. Stroup, with whom she spent 44 wonderful years with before his death in 1996. Ruth was proud to be a loving wife and mother of 5 children. Even after the loss of her two sons and husband, she still found time and strength, through her strong Christian beliefs, to lead with a servant's heart.
Ruth volunteered with the local Alexander City Hospice, as well as helped many of her friends and neighbors by providing transportation to work, the grocery store, and to medical appointments. She also donated to the local animal shelter and various other charities. Ruth never met a stranger and always had a kind word for everyone. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Alexander City. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ruth found comfort in reading books and watching game shows to keep her mind as sharp as possible. Above all, she received the most joy from helping others. Her life was a testament to her kind, tender, loving, and selfless heart.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Beverly Slater, Janice Stroup, Elizabeth (Derrick) Beaty; grandchildren, Layla Carnes, Thomas Joel Blanks, Leigh (Christopher) Thompson, Jeremy Blanks, Patrick (Katie) Klinksick, Kim (Clay) Guthrie, Adrienne (David) Hollmer; great-grandchildren, Autumn (Logan) Lovett, Kyle Chipman, Maddie Hoy, Kinley Carnes, McKenzie Hollmer, Zoe Hollmer, Sylas Hollmer, Skyler Guthrie, Emma Guthrie: brother, Kennon Overton; and sister, Patsy Martin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Stroup; sons, A.J. Stroup, James Augusta Stroup, Jr.; parents, David and Lottie Overton; and sister, JoAnn Pasteris.
