Funeral Service for Mr. Robert Leon McVey, 92, of Alexander City, Alabama, will be Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Mr. Phillip McVey will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Methodist Protestant Church Cemetery in Millerville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Radney Funeral Home.
Robert Leon McVey, known affectionately as Poppy to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, in Alexander City, Alabama. Born on March 31, 1933, in Pike County, Alabama, Robert's life was marked by his unwavering kindness, generosity, and the joy he found in the simple pleasures of life.
Robert's early years laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and dedication. His career in construction spanned an impressive 60 years, during which he crafted numerous homes around the scenic Lake Martin area. His work not only provided shelter for many but also left a lasting legacy of craftsmanship in the community he served.
A man of many interests, Robert found solace and joy in building and working with his hands. His love for gardening and yard work was evident to all who passed by his meticulously kept property. A game of dominos was among his favorite pastimes, as was singing and whistling tunes that reflected his contented spirit. Robert's pets, Buddy and Penta, were a source of great companionship and joy, embodying the love and care he extended to all living things.
Robert's heart was ever open, and his hands were always ready to help. Known as "Pop" to his family, he was the epitome of loving, handy, and generous. His presence was a source of strength and comfort, and his willingness to give selflessly knew no bounds. He was the kind of man who would indeed give you the shirt off his back without a second thought.
He leaves behind a loving and extensive family who will miss him dearly. His legacy is carried on by his son, Ken (Teresa) Dawson; daughter, Dana (Tim) Peters; daughter-in-law, Tina McVey; and his cherished grandchildren, Deborah (Lee) Seaton, Stormee McVey, Haleigh (Cody) Padgett, Rachel McVey, Tommy McVey, Brent Dawson, Scotty (Rachel) Dawson, Brittany (Andrew) Waddell, Morgan (Patrick) Rhodes, Ben Peters, Landon (Kaitlyn) Peters, Colby Peters, and Natali Peters. His great-grandchildren, Logan McVey, Emma Seaton, Maddie Rape, Ayden Harris, Everleigh Padgett, Emberleigh Padgett, and his great-great-grandchildren, Chesney Dawson and Tatum Rhodes, will also hold his memory close to their hearts. Robert is also survived by his sister, Effie Little; brother, Bobby McVey; and sister, Waydean Bishop.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alma Ruth McVey; his parents, Charles and Pauline McVey; stepmother, Essie McVey; daughter, Deborah Jean Dawson; son, Tony Lee McVey; grandchild, Derek McVey; and his five sisters and six brothers.
Robert Leon McVey's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, the value of hard work, and the importance of family. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his memory will be treasured forever. As we bid farewell to a man who was truly the heart of his family, we celebrate a life well-lived and a soul that enriched the lives of so many.
