Robert Edward Colley, affectionately known as Robert, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2023, at the age of 91, in Alexander City, Alabama, a short distance from where his story began in Tallapoosa County on March 12, 1932. His life was a testament to the values of kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness, virtues that endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Robert's early years were spent in the company of his loving parents, Barney Lee Colley and Rosie Ella Colley, and his siblings. He was the cherished brother to Earnest Colley (Norma), and he fondly remembered his brothers Charles, Byron, and John Colley, and his sisters Lois Browning, Sue Lovelady, and Faye Lowe, all of whom preceded him in death, as did his beloved daughter Clista Colley.
Robert's life was one of service and dedication. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Army during the Korean Conflict, where he demonstrated the same commitment and bravery that would characterize his later years. Following his honorable discharge, he embarked on a career as a Heavy Equipment Operator with Sam Mason Construction, a role he held for 30 years. His work ethic and expertise were well-known, and he was respected by his colleagues and friends in the industry.
Outside of his professional life, Robert was a man of many interests. He found joy in the simplicity of outdoor activities, whether it was fishing, rabbit hunting, or playing a competitive game of horseshoes. His garden was a place of pride and peace, where he would spend hours tending to his plants. Robert was also a keen card player, delighting in the camaraderie and challenge it brought.
Family was the cornerstone of Robert's life. He is survived by his devoted wife, Julia Frances Colley, and his children, Donna Machen, Rose Price (Wayne), and Robert Colley (Donna). He was a proud grandfather to Jamie Machen (Anna), Drew Machen (Brittney), Justin Price (Tammy), Clista Nada, Eddie Colley (Jessica), and Leigh Ann Burnell (Jeff). His legacy extends to his fifteen great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the memories and values he instilled in them.
Renowned for his love of family gatherings, Robert's presence was a guarantee of joy and laughter at fish fries and other celebrations. His love for his dogs was equally profound, and they, too, were a central part of the warm, inviting home he created.
Robert's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, yet his spirit will continue to inspire. His life was a journey marked by perseverance, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to the ones he loved.
