For those who knew him well, it is perhaps not necessary to recount the many kinds of colorful anecdotes of his life; some of which are too storied and colorful to appear on this page. But others may learn that Ricky's life was one of the least boring ones that we got to enjoy.
One of my early memories of Ricky was from the 5th grade, when the cook in my home served him 6 Coca Colas in a row, which he survived. My protests were met with his dismissive laughter. The cook named him "Ricky Nelson" for this acting stunt.
One may also learn that in his early teenage years he practiced on a set of drums. He was headed for a stint with the Grateful Dead before the National Guard snagged him.
The obituary does not mention his devotion to the Crimson Tide, but evidence of such is seen in the picture on his lapel.
Ricky Nelson, I'll never forget the time you were sitting on the boom of the sailboat and I jibed the boat instead of coming about. You went flying off into the bay. I fancy that event as some sort of generalized payback for drinking all those Coca Colas 15 years before.
We all have many great memories of Ricky and how he played out his colorful approach to life. I shall think of you often, with smiles and appreciation for all of the nice times we shared.
A life nicely lived and shared with others, Ricky Nelson!
