Randy McDaniel Thomas, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and esteemed community leader, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and his beloved city of Alexander City, AL.
Born to the late Lewis "Sebe" Maxwell Thomas Sr. and Sarah M. Thomas, Randy flourished in the nurturing environment of his family, which later expanded to include his brother, Max (Marcie) Thomas. Randy's formative years were spent within the close-knit community of Alexander City, where he graduated from Benjamin Russell High School and went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Auburn University. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a life of service and accomplishment.
In 1968, Randy's professional journey with the City of Alexander City began, marking the start of a career that would span nearly five decades. His dedication and hard work culminated in his role as director of community development, from which he retired in 2016. His impact on the city was profound, with his name becoming synonymous with growth and improvement. In 2012, the TC Russell airport paid homage to his contributions by naming the Randy M. Thomas Terminal building in his honor. Randy's talent as a grant writer brought to fruition several key projects, including the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home, the Children's Library, the Sportsplex, and the Senior Citizens Center. His efforts were recognized when he received the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award in Alexander City, a testament to his enduring influence.
Randy's life was rich with interests that brought him joy and relaxation. He was an avid golfer, relishing the time spent on the greens. Beach trips with Linda, his wife, and the love of his life, were treasured moments, as were the precious hours spent with his family. Randy's home was filled with the laughter and love of his daughters, Keeley (Jay) Johnson and Kim (Brent) Stephens; his grandchildren, Payten (Mark) Beacham, Marley (Brandon) Baynes, and Chloe Johnson; and his great-grandchild, Mark Allen Beacham Jr., with the joyful anticipation of Baby Girl Baynes arriving in September. Football and golf on television were his preferred pastimes, allowing him to unwind and share his passion with friends.
Described by those who knew him as intelligent, loving, and funny, Randy's sense of humor and sharp wit were as much a part of his legacy as his professional achievements. He had the rare ability to light up a room with his smile and leave a lasting impression on everyone he met. His love for his family was immeasurable, and his guidance and support were the pillars upon which they built their lives.
Randy is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Fuller Thomas of Alexander City, AL, and a host of family members and friends who were blessed to know him. His legacy is not only etched in the concrete of the structures he helped build but also in the hearts and memories of those who loved him.
As we bid farewell to Randy McDaniel Thomas, we celebrate a life well-lived, a community bettered by his presence, and a family fortified by his love. His spirit will forever remain a guiding light in the lives of those he touched. Randy's journey on this earth has come to a close, but the stories of his kindness, laughter, and wisdom will be told for generations to come. Rest in peace, dear Randy, knowing you have left the world a better place.
