Nancy Louise Neighbors Womack, affectionately known as Nancy, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2024, in her hometown of Alexander City, Alabama. Born on April 20, 1943, also in Alexander City, she was a beacon of love and intelligence in the lives of all who knew her.
Nancy's journey was one marked by devotion to education and faith. She graduated from Benjamin Russell High School and continued her academic pursuits at Samford University before completing her studies at Auburn University. Her passion for learning led her to a distinguished career in education, where she taught English, Psychology, and served as a Guidance Counselor in various institutions including schools in New Orleans, Phenix City, Lanett, Southern Union State Community College, and Central Alabama Community College.
As an educator, Nancy touched the lives of countless students with her wisdom and nurturing spirit. She was a guiding light, not only in the classroom but also in her community. Nancy was a longtime and active member of the First Baptist Church in Alexander City, where she dedicated herself as a Sunday School teacher and was deeply involved in Missions. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, influencing her generous work as a volunteer for the Russell Medical Auxiliary.
An avid reader, Nancy found joy in the quiet moments spent with a book. She was also a culinary enthusiast, known especially for her Million Dollar Pound Cake, a treat that will be remembered by friends and family as a symbol of her love and care. Her interests, however, always circled back to her family, whom she cherished above all.
Nancy's legacy is carried on by her loving husband of 59 years, Jack Womack, and her sons, Jay and Brian Womack, all of Alexander City. Her role as a sister was equally cherished, as she is survived by Gale (Tim) Mayfield and Robert (Robyn) Neighbors, also of Alexander City. Her extended family included her brothers-in-law, Drew Whitmire, adopted daughters, Tammy Brooks and Theresa Jones, and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Nancy's life was also enriched by the joy she brought to her role as an aunt and the wisdom she imparted to her nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her father, Robert Ralph Neighbors, mother, Alma Queen Neighbors, sister, Jenny Whitmire, and nephew, Todd Mayfield. They were the roots of her family tree, and she spoke of them with love and reverence, ensuring their memories lived on in the stories she shared.
Nancy was a woman of many virtues-loving, intelligent, and faith-filled. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a wonderful sister. Above all, she was a caregiver by nature, always placing the needs of her family and friends before her own. Her presence was a comforting embrace, her advice a guiding compass, and her love a constant warmth.
The void left by Nancy's departure will be felt deeply by those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be remembered as a pillar of strength, a reservoir of knowledge, and a heart full of boundless love. As we bid farewell to Nancy Louise Neighbors Womack, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be given to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 400, Alexander City, AL 35010.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the wonderful staff of Enhabit Hospice for the love, care and support that has been extended to Nancy and the family.
