Mattie Maude Hand Jones, lovingly known as Mattie, passed away on April 28, 2026, in Alexander City, Alabama, at the age of 92.
She was born on November 20, 1933, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, and lived a long life marked by devotion, hard work, and quiet strength. Mattie was a loving, gentle, and faith-filled woman whose presence brought comfort and warmth to those around her. She was known for the care she gave so freely to others and for the steady example she set throughout her life.
Mattie devoted more than 40 years of service to Russell Corporation, where she worked faithfully and with great dedication. Her strong work ethic and dependable spirit were evident to all who knew her. She took pride in doing her work well and carried that same sense of responsibility into every part of her life. Her long career reflected her commitment, perseverance, and the dignity with which she approached each day.
Family was at the center of Mattie’s heart. She loved her family deeply and found great joy in spending time with them and caring for them. Her grandchildren held a very special place in her life, and she loved them dearly. She was happiest when she could nurture, encourage, and provide for those she loved. Her home and her table were often filled with the comfort of her kindness and the blessing of her generous spirit.
Mattie also enjoyed sewing, a pastime that reflected her patience and skill. She had a remarkable gift for gardening and was known to have a green thumb. She loved working with plants and could grow almost anything with ease. Her hands were always busy, whether she was tending to her garden, sewing, or preparing a meal for her family. She was also widely known as an excellent cook, and her homemade biscuits and vegetables were especially cherished by those fortunate enough to enjoy them. Her cooking was one of the many ways she expressed her love.
Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life. Mattie began her faith journey at Zion Hill Baptist Church when she was young, and later became a member of New Salem Baptist Church. She studied her Bible faithfully and held tightly to the promises of God. Philippians 4:13 was her favorite verse, and it reflected the strength and trust that carried her through life. Her faith was not only something she believed, but something she lived each day through her words, her actions, and her example.
Mattie will be remembered for her loving nature, her gentle spirit, and her unwavering faith. She touched the lives of many through her kindness, her devotion to family, and her steadfast character. Those who knew her will remember her as a woman of grace, strength, and humility, whose life was a blessing to all who were privileged to share in it.
