Mrs Mabel Lucile Carlton's Obituary
Mrs. Mabel Lucile Weaver Carlton, 88 passed away on September 2, 2022, At Coosa Valley Medical Center in Sylacauga. Visitation will be held at 9:00 am on Wednesday, September 7 at First Baptist C church, Sylacauga followed by a Memorial Service at 10:00 at same location officiated by Pastor Rick Patrick of First Baptist Church, Sylacauga. A private graveside service for family members will be held afterward at the internment site at Hillview Memorial Park, Alexander City, AL. Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City, AL directing.
Mrs. Carlton was born January 21, 1934, in Eden, Concho County, TX. She grew up in Jacksonville, AL and graduated from Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville State University, Auburn University and UAB. She married Reginald Carlton in 1954 and moved to Sylacauga, AL to begin her teaching career at Gantt’s Quarry School, then transferred to B.B. Comer Memorial High School in Sylacauga, AL to teach high school science and later become the high school Guidance Counselor until she retired.
Mrs. Carlton was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Sylacauga, the Lydia Sunday School class, The Silver Tones, and Metallic Club for Seniors. Mabel was active in the Sylacauga Arts Council, Sylacauga Marble Festival Sculpture exhibits and sales in the B.B. Comer Memorial Library. During their lives together, Mabel and her husband both enjoyed teaching careers, beef cattle farming as members of the Talladega County Cattlemen’s Association, AKC dog shows, Border Collie trails, and Quarter Horse shows. They normally owned a couple of AKC Boxer dogs and horses during their 57-year marriage. Mrs. Carlton loved sewing items to give to family members and friends, sending cards, reading, and watching old movies and television shows. She had an exceptional “green thumb” which was evident to all who viewed the plants around her home.
Survivors include her daughter Rebecca Lynn (Becky) Carlton Clifton and her husband Joseph Raymond (Joe) Clifton of Opelika, AL; grandsons John Raymond Clifton and wife Molly of Carrollton, GA, and Kyle Joseph Clifton and wife Haley of Pike Road, AL; four great-grandchildren; Katherine Lynn (Kate) Clifton, Joseph Jackson (Jack) Clifton, and Eleanor Grace Clifton and Emory Anne Clifton; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Weaver Laird and husband Chris of Richmond, KY, and Frances Weaver of Southside (Gadsden), AL; nephews Robert (Bob) Stewart of Southside, AL, George Ralph (Buster) Carlton of Sylacauga, Jeffery Carlton of Alexander City, Richard (Rick)Laird of Richmond, KY, And Robert (Rob) Laird of Weston, FL; nieces; Mary Vivian Weaver West of Wetumpka, AL, Elizabeth Carlton McMillion of Alexandre City, AL, and niece-in-law Gail Phillips Stewart of Southside, AL.
Mrs. Carlton was pre-deceased by her husband of 57 years, Reginald Dewey Carlton, daughters Cynthia Ann Carlton and Eleanor Ruth Carlton; parents, Arthur Edward and Dora Belle Alexander Weaver of Jacksonville, AL; brothers James Edward Weaver and Walter Edwin Weaver; sister Marjorie Louise Weaver Stewart; nephews, William Warren (Bill) Stewart and John Robert (Bobby) Bonner; and parents-in-law, George Rufus and Eleanor Agnes Dennis Carlton of Alexander city and Coosa County, AL.
