Linda Gail Suggs, known affectionately as Gail by her loved ones, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024, in Birmingham, Alabama and was called to her eternal home, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion. Born on October 24, 1942, in Decatur, Alabama, Gail's kindness and gentle spirit touched the lives of those around her throughout her 81 years.
Gail is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of many years, Douglas Reed Suggs, who stood by her side as a pillar of support and partnership. Her daughters, Shanon Michelle (Lynn) Mitchell and Kelly Suzanne (Scott) Gurosky, were the apples of her eye, and she raised them with an abundance of love and wisdom. Gail's role as a Nana was one of her greatest joys, cherishing every moment with her grandchildren, Rob (Anna) Mitchell, Hannah (Matthew) Overton, Davis (Caylea) Gurosky, and Drew (Chloe) Gurosky. The light of her life shone even brighter with the arrival of her great-grandchildren, Emerson Lynn Overton and Theodore Powell Mitchell.
Gail's parents, Sterling Barnett Duke and Gladys Gertrude Duke, as well as her half-brother, Johnny South, preceded her in death.
For 25 years, Gail served diligently as the Administrative Assistant to the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church, where her faith-filled life flourished. Her unwavering commitment to her faith was evident to all who knew her. Gail's love for Jesus was the cornerstone of her existence, and she never missed an opportunity to share her faith during any conversation. As a longtime member of First Baptist Church, she also dedicated over 30 years to teaching Sunday School, impacting countless lives through her wisdom and guidance.
Those who knew Gail were blessed by her inherently kind, positive, and encouraging nature. She was a beacon of unconditional love and support, always placing the needs of others before her own. Her gentle spirit and quiet yet profound way of living out her beliefs made her a trusted confidante to many, who sought her out for her wise counsel.
Gail's passion for reading and lifelong learning was matched only by her talent as a writer. Her short stories, penned with the same love and care she put into every aspect of her life, were a testament to her creative spirit. Her love for her family was immeasurable, and she and Douglas shared an immense bond that was the foundation of their family. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters and rejoiced in the joys of being loving grandparents and great-grandparents.
Faith-filled, loving, and gentle are but a few words that encapsulate the essence of Gail's character. Her life was a living example of her deep-seated beliefs, and her presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to all.
As we bid farewell to Gail, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that was a true embodiment of love and faith. Her memory will forever be a guiding light to her family, her friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have felt the warmth of her gentle soul.
Gail's family takes comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, resting in the loving arms of her Savior. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love she gave so freely. Gail's spirit will continue to inspire and influence future generations, just as it has throughout her remarkable life.
As we reflect on Gail's life, we are reminded of the profound impact one person can have on so many. Her legacy of faith, love, and kindness will remain an everlasting treasure in the hearts of those who loved her. Gail's journey on earth may have concluded, but her story is far from over, as it will be told and retold, keeping her spirit alive for years to come.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to First Baptist Church, Mission Fund, P.O. Box 400, Alexander City, AL 35010.
