Funeral Service for Mrs. Joyce Lyien Mathis, 75, of Ashland, Alabama, will be Friday, May 30, 2025, at 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Hillview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 30, 2025, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm at Radney Funeral Home.
Joyce Lyien Mathis, a cherished pillar of her community and a beacon of warmth and generosity, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. Joyce's life was defined by her spirited nature, her unwavering friendliness, and her boundless generosity, touching the lives of all who knew her.
Born and raised in the close-knit community of Hackneyville, AL. Joyce was a proud graduate of Hackneyville High School. Her career spanned over two decades at Winn Dixie, where she was not just an employee but a friend to many. From 1998 to 2012, she poured her heart into Mathis Service Center in Ashland, AL, which she owned and operated. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her commitment to supporting local schools and all-star teams, embodying the very spirit of community involvement.
Joyce's love for life extended to her family, who were the cornerstone of her existence. She is survived by her loving daughters, Stephanie (Phillip) Jones and Laine Mathis, both of Ashland, AL. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Elizabeth Adel Jones, Madison Jaine Denney, and Jasper O'rion Denney, who were the apple of her eye. Joyce's sister, JoAnn (Melvin) Mathis, nephew, Matt (Amy) Mathis, and cousin, Candace Coker (Brian) Fielders, will forever hold her memory in their hearts. Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Mathis, her father, J.B. Peoples, her mother, Dorothy Woodruff Peoples and infant daughter, Windy Lyien Peoples.
Those who knew Joyce will fondly remember her love for animals, especially her cats, which brought great joy to her life. Her family will miss the times spent grilling out, a favorite pastime that brought everyone together, filled with laughter and joy. Joyce's culinary skills were legendary; her wonderful chocolate cake and excellent pound cake were the highlights of many gatherings, always requested by friends and family.
Joyce's warm personality extended into her professional life, where she loved her customers at Winn Dixie. Her customers at Mathis Service Center were more than patrons; they were like family to her. It was this connection to people that made Joyce truly special.
Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she adored every moment spent with them. They, along with the rest of her family and friends, will remember Joyce for her vibrant spirit and her unwavering dedication to those she loved.
Joyce Lyien Mathis lived a life that exemplified the very best of what it means to be a part of a community. Her friendly smile, generous heart, and the care she showed to everyone will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her legacy of love, service, and joy will continue to inspire all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
