Mr. Mathis, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, left this world on January 21, 2026. Born on January 20, 1953, in Alexander City, Alabama, to Perry Mathis and Velma Warren Traylor, Jerry lived a full life surrounded by the people and the town he deeply loved and never left.
Jerry was a man known for his skillful hands and inventive spirit. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of mechanics that allowed him to breathe life into almost any contraption - be it a stubborn lawnmower, a quirky appliance, or a vintage vehicle. His passion for fixing and restoring was matched only by his love for the thrill of the hunt at flea markets and yard sales. Jerry's joy in these adventures was evident to anyone who accompanied him as he sought out the next treasure or project.
Above all, Jerry's devotion to his family defined him. A doting father and grandfather, his family was his pride and joy. To his children, he was a source of strength, wisdom, and unwavering support. His grandchildren and great-grandchild filled his life with laughter and love that he reciprocated tenfold. Every moment spent with them was cherished, and the memories they created will be treasured forever.
Jerry’s life was one marked by love, diligence, and a knack for finding joy in the simple things. As he rests in his beloved hometown of Alexander City, those who knew him will remember a man who taught us the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the contentment that comes with doing what one loves. Mr. Jerry Mathis may have passed from this life, but his legacy will continue to flourish in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jackie Lou Mathis; daughter, Sherri Jane (Mark) Davidson; sons, Jerry G. Mathis, Jr. and Jason Mathis all of Alexander City; grandchildren, Kevin Kaas, Matthew (Kaitlyn) Dunn, Bently Mathis, Gage Murphy, Drake Mathis, Owen Stokes, and Nathan Stokes; great-grandchild, Saylor Nova Dunn; brothers, Terry Mathis of Dadeville and Wayne (Elaine) Mathis of New Site.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Charles Mathis.
