James Powell passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. He was born on September 13, 1935 to James L. Powell and Jessie Powell. James was an honorable man who served his country in the United States Navy. He married the love of his life, Shirley Strickland Powell, and created 55 years of memories with one another. Anything that Shirley wanted, James made it happen. Occasionally he would be rewarded by his favorite dessert-Shirley's famous chocolate cake. Their family tree grew over the years, and nothing brought more joy than spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately knew them as "MawMaw" and "PawPaw." James loved taking his grandchildren on vacations and teaching valuable lessons and skills. He made sure to remind each one of them that they were his favorite.
James had a stubborn side and could be firm at times, but he was a loving family man who was dedicated and devoted to his family. His hard-working perfectionist side kept him working up until retirement. Once retired, he and his wife would travel to all kinds of places, finding their favorite spots for future visits. In his spare time, James could be found building things in his shop, watching John Wayne movies, listening to old country music, or cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide. There wasn't a dish that James wouldn't eat, but his favorite included hamburger steak, baked potatoes, cornbread, and a green salad. He also enjoyed dove hunting with his sons and curling up next to his fur-babies, Princess & Crybaby.
James is survived by his sons, Brian (Jennifer) Powell; Steve (Kim) Powell; daughters, Tracey (Jamison) Brown, Faithe Powell (Harry) Steele; grandchildren, Brandi (Jay) Cherry, Jenifer Isbell, Lynlee P. (Cooper) Nichols, Chief James B. Powell, Michael (Laurie) Smith, Rob (Valerie) Smith, April Hand, Christopher (Kristen) Powell, Madison (Larry) Dunn, Keeley (Jordan) Argo, Caroline Powell, Adam (Amber) Jackson, Hope Jones; and many great grandchildren & great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Powell; daughter, Cindy Smith; and parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Powell.
