Hugh Holley passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Chapman’s Healthcare Center. Born on November 19, 1929, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, he was the son of Mr. Albert Ross Holley and Mrs. Lela Pearl Davis Holley. Hugh was educated in the Alexander City school system and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville State University as well as a master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University.
As a young man, Hugh taught numerous children to swim. His love for adventure even led him to the beautiful beaches of Florida where he served as a lifeguard during summer breaks. During the Korean conflict, Hugh joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country with bravery and honor.
Mr. Holley became a teacher, primarily in the Alexander City school system, until his retirement. He maintained personal relationships with many of his students over the years, and his impact on their lives can be seen and heard through the fun stories of their “favorite teacher, Mr. Holley!” Not only was he a “fun” teacher, but he also took a genuine interest in his students. Mr. Holley became a mentor to quite a few who might have needed just a little nudge or being that fatherly figure to help them through tough times.
Mr. Holley had a laugh that was unmistakable and unforgettable that would often confirm his presence at any movie theater, outdoor event, or even in church! Hugh joined the First Baptist Church of Alexander City as a young adult and was a very active, dedicated member until recent years when health issues prevented his attendance. Recognized as Deacon Emeritus and having served on various committees, Hugh truly loved his church and the lifelong “FBC” friendships which proved invaluable to him.
Fishing and gardening were amongst Hugh’s favorite hobbies. He loved fishing on Lake Martin, on the family pond, and even in the Gulf. Fishing adventures were made complete with the company of friends and former students joining in with their fishing stories of who could catch the largest and the most fish. Hugh earned the rank of Master Gardener and enjoyed sharing invaluable tips with new gardeners. His vegetable garden was without a doubt the cleanest, most carefully laid out and productive garden around. One of his greatest summertime joys was sharing beautiful vine ripe-red tomatoes with friends, family, and local eateries. Above all, Hugh loved his family and never failed to show that love. There’s no doubt that he planted many seeds of joyful memories and cast so much light within the hearts of all that knew him.
Hugh is survived by his son, Bruce (Beth) Holley; daughter, Susan Holley (Bill) Cage; grandchildren, Neil (Shannon) Holley, Bailey Cage, Ben (Brooklyn Williamson) Cage, Sanders Cage; great-grandchildren, Dawson Nolen, Cooper Nolen, Nathan Holley; sister-in-law, Gaye Holley Veazey; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lenora “Nancy” Clentel Holley; granddaughter, Laura Holley; parents, Albert and Lela Holley; brothers, Milton Holley, Donald Holley; sisters, Norma Langston, Thaddie Caldwell, Athlene White, and Judy Johnson.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Chapman’s Healthcare Center for their genuine love and dedication during Mr. Holley’s stay.
