Helen Snowden Martin, a beacon of intelligence, kindness, and faith, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. Born into the nurturing arms of David Lee and Eunice Cornelia Snowden, Helen's life was one of purpose,
compassion, and dedication. Her journey began as one of the few female pioneers in pharmacy, graduating from Auburn University in March of 1949. It was there that she met the love of her life, Bill Martin, and the two were united in marriage on March 19, 1948.
Helen's professional life was marked by an impressive 30-year career as a pharmacist, with 24 years devoted to Russell Hospital as the esteemed pharmacy director. Her commitment to her vocation was matched only by her involvement in community associations, including Beta Sigma Phi and the Women's Missionary Union at First Methodist, where she served with distinction and grace.
A devout Christian, Helen's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. She found great joy and fulfillment as a long-standing member of the First United Methodist Church in Alexander City, where she and her beloved Bill were active participants for many years. Her spiritual life was a testament to her faith-filled nature, inspiring all who knew her.
Helen's zest for life extended beyond her professional and spiritual commitments. She and Bill shared a love for travel, with cruises and trips to New Orleans for the jazz scene being among her favorite adventures. Her passion for the beauty of the world was also evident in her love for flowers and shrubs, which she tended with a gentle and nurturing hand.
A master in the kitchen, Helen's pound cakes were legendary, a specialty that brought together family and friends over shared moments of delight. Her intelligence shone not only in her career but also in the wisdom she imparted to her loved ones.
Helen's legacy continues through her cherished family. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Martin Huffman of Concord, GA; her sons, William Edward Martin Jr. of Fultondale, AL, and Franklin Lee Martin of Sylacauga, AL; her sister, Margaret Snowden Hart; and her adoring grandchildren, Greg Huffman, Brian Moore, Ann-Marie Wagner, Emily Spencer, Troy Huffman, Jonathan Martin, Amanda Hicks, Robb Huffman, Bradley Martin, Clint Benefield, and Austin Martin. Her life's joy was further multiplied by the blessings of several great-grandchildren.
Helen's reunion in eternity is with her beloved husband, William Edward Martin Sr., her father, David Lee Snowden, her mother, Eunice Cornelia Snowden, her daughter, Elizabeth Martin Burns and her sister, Shirley Snowden Daniels, who all preceded her in death.
Helen Snowden Martin's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of love, service, and faith. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her light, though no longer present on this earth, will continue to shine brightly through the lives of her family and the many lives she touched.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to the Adams Memory Care staff as well as the nurses of Southern Care Hospice for the wonderful care given to their loved one.
