Mr. Gerald Martin's Obituary
Funeral service for Mr. Gerald Curtis Martin, 88, of Hackneyville, AL, will be Sunday, June 29, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Randy Anderson and the Rev. Ray Weaver will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hackneyville Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home.
Mr. Martin, a beacon of kindness and a man of deep faith, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025. Born on January 11, 1937, Mr. Martin lived a life characterized by love, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to his Christian values. His warm presence and generous spirit left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
His journey through life was shared with his devoted wife and best friend of 66 years, Martha Lessley Martin, of Hackneyville. Together, they nurtured a family that includes their son, Gerad Martin and his wife, Stacey, of Alexander City; their daughters, Lisa Miller and her husband, Mike, of Prattville; and Robin Schwab and her husband, Richard, of Fort Myers, FL. Mr. Martin’s legacy of love continues through his five cherished grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the wisdom and joy he imparted.
Mr. Martin was a beloved brother to Charles Lynn Martin of Hackneyville. He was preceded in death by his father, George Curtis Martin, his mother, Mildred Inez Martin, his brother Billy Wayne Martin, and his sister Carol Jean Martin. Each family member played a significant role in his life, providing him with moments of laughter, support, and shared memories that formed the tapestry of his rich family life.
Throughout his life, Mr. Martin was an embodiment of loving kindness. His actions, guided by his faith, were a testament to his character. A man who led by example, Mr. Martin's approach to life's challenges was always with a gentle grace and unwavering positivity. His faith-filled nature was evident in his everyday interactions and his commitment to his church, Liberty Methodist Church, where he actively served with humility and joy.
Mr. Martin’s professional life was marked by the same level of dedication and excellence that he brought to his personal endeavors. His colleagues and former students respected him for his integrity and fairness.
He earned his B.S. degree in Education from Auburn University, and a Masters of Education and a Specialist in Education degree from West Georgia College in Carrollton, GA. Mr. Martin served successively as a social studies teacher with the Cobb County Board of Education at Kennesaw School in Kennesaw, GA, and Bernard Awtrey Junior High (1960-70) in Acworth, GA. While at Awtrey, he was the head coach for the girls’ basketball team. He was an assistant principal at East Cobb Middle School in Marietta, GA (1970-75), followed by service as a social studies teacher at Goodwater High School in Goodwater (1975-77), and Hackneyville High School in Hackneyville (1977-1992). In 1992, he joined the faculty at Horseshoe Bend High School in New Site. He retired from Horseshoe Bend High School in 1998, following a distinguished career in education, which spanned 38 years.
As an educator, Mr. Martin positively impacted thousands of young minds, and that influence is still evident today. Education and knowledge were very important to Mr. Martin. He worked very hard throughout his life, demonstrating determination and perseverance in the face of challenges, while making significant sacrifices for himself and his family.
His retirement years were spent enjoying the simple pleasures of life: traveling with his wife, the company of his family, the beauty of nature, and the quiet moments that allow for reflection and gratitude.
As we bid farewell to Mr. Gerald Martin, we are reminded of the impact one life can have on so many. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose and imbued with a sense of service to others. Mr. Martin’s memory will be treasured, his lessons will remain with us, and his spirit will continue to guide us. We take solace in the knowledge that his was a life that truly made a difference.

His story does not end with his passing, for his influence will continue to be felt, and his love will forever be a guiding light for his family and friends. Mr. Martin’s journey on earth was a testament to the beauty of a life grounded in love and faith.
