Frances Godfrey, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama. Born on April 4, 1936, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, she lived a life full of resilience, love, and faith, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire her family and those who knew her.
Frances was a woman of strength and courage who, despite facing the challenges of polio at a young age, never let adversity define her. Instead, she embraced life with a spirit that was as vibrant as the gardens she loved to tend. She was a source of constant inspiration to her family and friends, demonstrating how to live life with grace, faith, and undying love.
Frances spent over three decades working at the Russell Corporation, where she was known for her dedication and hard work. Equally important to her was the time she spent on her front porch with her neighbors, sharing stories, laughter, and the simple joys of life. Sara had a passion for cooking, especially her famous pecan pies, and she loved picking up pecans, an activity that brought her immense joy and satisfaction. The love she had for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was unparalleled, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Frances is survived by her son, Wesley Joel Godfrey, and her daughter, Emily Dawn Foster (Travis) of Ashland, AL. She was a proud grandmother to Ashley Price (Eric), Wesley M Godfrey, and Mitch Foster (Brianna), and a doting great-grandmother to Kensley Godfrey, Aidan Foster, and Mattie Claire Price. She also leaves behind her nieces, Diane Brown Wade and Rita Faye Roberts (Lane).
She was preceded in death by her first husband, W.J. Godfrey, second husband, Jack Rutland, father, Luther Franklin Storey, mother, Alvie Storey, brothers, Jesse R. Storey and Preston Storey, and nephew, Johnnie Storey.
Frances’s life was a testament to the words of Helen Keller, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." Her faith-filled and loving nature, coupled with her courage, were the pillars of her character, inspiring those around her to be their best selves.
Her life was a beautiful journey, filled with love, resilience, and faith. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. May her memory be a beacon of inspiration and love to all who knew her
