Mrs. Evelyn Baker Futral's Obituary
Mrs. Evelyn Futral transitioned peacefully in her sleep to be with her Lord, on Sunday, December 26, 2021. She was born in Alexander City to Travis and Ruby Baker and grew up in Russell Mill Village where she loved to walk and play with her many friends.
She graduated from Alexander City High School and went to work with Southern Bell Telephone Company. She later met her future husband of 56 years, Thomas Lamar Futral, on a “picket line.” They made their home in Alexander City and raised their two daughters, Susan Kilgore (Rodney) and Cathy Vardaman.
She worked at No 1 mill for 35 years and retired to join the Medical Auxiliary of Russell Hospital where she was recognized as ‘Volunteer of the Year” in 2012 with over 20 years of service.
She was an active member of New Providence Baptist church for over 65 years and served in many capacities. She loved her church family and enjoyed attending as long as her health permitted.
Four granddaughters, Kelly Kilgore Harper, Lisa Vardaman, Karen Kilgore Epperson (Nathan) and Kaci Kilgore Richardson (Bryan) loved their grandmother dearly and spent many days in her home playing dress up, reading books and being slathered in vinegar when they got a “boo boo.”
The great-grandchildren Trent Harper (Stephanie), Marleigh Harper Blocker (Aaron), Madeline Epperson, Thomas Richardson, Brayden Epperson, Max Richardson and Brock Epperson, were loved as well. They treasure memories of fun times at Grandma’s house.
Evalyn Elisabeth Harper, the great-great-granddaughter was a joy to her and she looked forward to her visits.
In addition, she is survived by her brother, Billy Wayne Baker (Shirley); sister-in-law, Dot Futral and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Aubrey Baker (Allie), Lawton Baker (Betty) and sister Inez Baker Blake (Ira).
