Edweina always enjoyed music. She started singing in church as a child and as a teen started playing the piano. She received her bachelor's degree in 1955 from Mississippi Southern College, and then received her master’s degree from Auburn University in 1957. While attending college she sang in a gospel trio that traveled and sang throughout the Southeast. She also sang backup for “Little” Jimmy Dempsey and Jerry Reed.
She met Jake Kilpatrick from Dadeville in 1958, and they married in Atlanta in March of 1959. They then settled in Atlanta where they had their two children, Claudia and John. Edweina was an elementary school teacher in Atlanta for 33 years. After she retired, she spent time writing a family cookbook which she later had published. Combining her loving and caring personality and her passion for cooking, Edweina served time as a church hostess and enjoyed having family and friends over for a meal.
