Dewanda Maxine Black Smith passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024 at Russell Medical Center. Born on November 14, 1936, she was the daughter of Chester Nathaniel Black and Margaret Irene Foster Black and was lovingly raised by Wanita Elder Cox Black. She was a faithful member of West End Church and always attended whenever she could. Dewanda's dedication was a notable trait with her service to Wind Creek State Park for over 20 years as the Maintenance Secretary as well as a Tax Preparer for H & R Block. She even opened her own tax business called D's Tax Service.
In her spare time, Dewanda could be found in the garden growing various herbs and vegetables-tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, and more. Her kitchen counters were stocked and lined from the canning she'd do once the vegetables were harvested. There was always something being grown because Dewanda believed that 'you gotta eat.' She was the type of woman to make sure the ones she loved were well and fed.
Never was there such a caring and loving spirit like Dewanda. She was the epitome of selflessness and love. Her family tree went far beyond the average because she cared for those she loved like family. Dewanda was a natural caregiver who found fulfillment in raising children, majority of the time "adopting" them immediately. Family was very important to this strong matriarch who everyone affectionately knew as "Nonnie." She was always willing to listen and give her outspoken, opinionated, and straight-forward advice...with love, of course.
Dewanda is survived by children, Tommy Wrubel, Mary W. Browning, Valla M. (Mel) Slaton, Jeff (Terrie) Wrubel; ones raised like children, Misti Rich, Brent Baker (Kelley), Maria Tinoco (Gavin); grandchildren, April Henley (Scott), Shelia Eiland, Jeremy Shurum (Danielle), Ashley Isbell (B.J.), Mike Nolen (Rachel), Amber Kellum (Roman), Amanda Platt, Tommy Farley, Cheyenne Owens (Ricky), Lilly Collins, Macy Slaton, Shannon Fowler; great-grandchildren, J.R.
