Memorial Service for Mr. Derrell Lamar Wilson, 79, of Alexander City, will be Sunday, August 27, 2023 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Mr. Rick Norton will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00pm until 3:00pm.
Derrell passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 21, 2023 at Russell Medical Center. He was born on November 11, 1943 in Clanton, Alabama to Lawton Wilson and Dilene Maddox Wilson. The best way to describe Derrell is through the words of his loving family. They remember him as a caring, honest, hardworking man who took care of everybody. Derrell proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Medic and then served in the United States Army Reserve. His time in the military earned him several honors, and he never wavered on his patriotism and love for his country. After serving, Derrell wore many hats in his life including driving a school bus for the Alexander City School System for many years. He also worked for Russell Corporation as part of the security.
In his free time, Derrell spent time working with poultry, raising chickens and ducks. This wonderful skill of being a hard worker is a quality that his family will treasure and admire him for. Derrell was very frank and honest to everyone and wasn't afraid to "tell it like it is." The only exception to that was towards his beautiful wife, Mary, whom he showed never ending love and devotion to during their time together. Affectionately known as "PawPaw," one of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren. He was a wonderful PawPaw, father, brother, and uncle who will be greatly missed.
Derrell is survived by his son, Todd Wilson; daughters, Jamie (Rick) Norton, Ashley Wilson; grandson, Tyler (Katie) Norton; sisters, Eula Moncrief, Peggy Justice; sister-in-law, Devota Patterson; brother-in-law, Paul Brown; several nieces and nephews including, Kelli Causey, Amy Hardy, and Jimmy Paul "J.P." Brown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Wilson; granddaughter, Skylar Norton; parents, Lawton and Diline Wilson; and several siblings.
