Mrs. Derra Arlene Sims' Obituary
Derra Sims, a beacon of love and laughter, passed away peacefully surrounded by the warmth of her family. Born into a world that she would fill with joy and kindness, Derra's journey began as the beloved daughter of Durrell and Madine Vickers. Her life was a testament to the power of courage, thoughtfulness, and humor, which she generously shared with all who knew her.
A proud graduate of Wesleyan Methodist Academy in Salem, OH, Derra's pursuit of education was the foundation upon which she built a life of accomplishment and service. While attending high school, she worked at Scots Candy, where the sweetness of her personality was as evident as the confections she sold. Derra later channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into establishing Proscript, a medical transcription business where she dedicated several years to providing exemplary service with a personal touch that was uniquely hers.
Derra's zest for life was matched only by her dedication to her family. She is survived by a loving and vibrant family: her sons, Jamie (Melissa) Sims and Joshua (Jennifer) Sims; her daughter, Amber (Richard) Bradford; and her cherished grandchildren, William, Anthony, Michael, and Lexie Sims, Connor and Jayden Bradford, and Dayson and Drake Zeigler. She was a sister to Chet (Linda) Vickers of Salem, OH and a beloved sister-in-law to Gail Mathis (Roy) and Larry Sims. Her family was the center of her universe, and she embraced every moment with them as a precious gift.
The legacy of Derra's love story is shared with her late husband, Marty Lynn Sims, who preceded her in death. Together, they created a lifetime of memories (getting married at the first jazz fest held in Alexander City) that will continue to be cherished and celebrated by those they touched.
Derra's interests were a reflection of her multifaceted personality. An avid reader, she found solace and adventure within the pages of books. Her grandchildren brought immeasurable joy to her life, and she cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, imparting wisdom and sharing laughs that will echo through generations. Derra's hands were skilled in the art of making yoyo quilts, a craft she learned from her mother-in-law and perfected with love and patience. Her quilts, like her personality, were vibrant and comforting, a legacy of her talent and care.
Not one to miss her favorite shows, Derra also enjoyed watching television, often accompanied by her fur babies, who were a source of constant companionship and joy. Her home was a hub of warmth, with the hum of laughter and the comfort of being surrounded by those she loved.
Derra's humor was a light in the lives of many, her laughter a melody that will continue to resonate in the hearts of her family and friends. She faced life's challenges with unwavering courage, never losing her ability to smile and find joy in the simple pleasures. Her thoughtfulness knew no bounds, and she had an uncanny ability to make everyone around her feel special and loved.
As we bid farewell to Derra Sims, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a heart generously given. Her spirit, a blend of strength, love, and laughter, will forever be a guiding force for those who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she has left this earthly realm, her legacy will continue to inspire and comfort us in the days to come.
The family wishes to express a special “Thank You” to the nurses at Enhabit Hospice for the wonderful care given to their loved one.
