David Grady Patterson, a beacon of faith and kindness, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, December 29, 2025. Born on February 27, 1949, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, to Grady Patterson and Sarah Nell Burton Patterson, David's life was a testament to steadfast commitment and service.
A lifelong resident of Alexander City, David was a cherished member of the community. He graduated from Benjamin Russell High School in 1967, having attended school with perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade—a remarkable feat that foreshadowed his dedication to excellence. He furthered his education at Alexander City State Junior College, earning an associate's degree, and then at Auburn University, where he received a bachelor's degree in secondary education. His passion for learning led him back to Auburn University in 1976 to complete his Master of Arts in the College of Education, specializing in Vocational Rehabilitation.
David dedicated nearly four decades to working for the state department of vocational rehabilitation, where he helped countless individuals find hope and purpose. His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. He was an active member of the Alexander City chapter of the Jaycees, regularly volunteered to serve meals on wheels, and was deeply involved in the Wayside Baptist Church, where he had been a member for over 70 years.
At Wayside Baptist Church, David's voice could be heard in the choir for over 50 years, and his wisdom shared as a deacon for 58 years. He taught Sunday School for more than half a century, went on numerous mission trips, and served on countless church committees. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, and he lived it with a selfless heart.
David's commitment to his faith was matched by his dedication to the Boy Scouts of America, where he achieved the prestigious Eagle Scout award. He was also selected to be a member of the Order of the Arrow and was proud of his God and Country Award.
David's kind and faith-filled nature was the fabric of his being. He was a selfless man who lived to serve others, always putting the needs of his family and community before his own.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Muriel Ann Patterson; his daughter, Whitney (Eric) Miller; his son, Tyler David (Shelley) Patterson; and his cherished grandchildren, Ayden Miller, Hudson Patterson, Emerson Miller, Ezra Miller, and Thatcher Patterson. His sister, Linda (David) Dennis, uncles, Durward Burton, Frank (Janice) Burton, Jack Burton and his aunt, Ruth Brown, also survives him. David was preceded in death by his father, Grady Patterson, and his mother, Sarah Nell Patterson.
David Grady Patterson's legacy is one of unwavering faith, boundless kindness, and a lifetime of service. His memory will be held dear in the hearts of all who knew him, and his influence will continue to be felt in the community he loved so much. He has left this world a better place, and for that, he will be profoundly missed.
