Rev. Clayton Andrew Gilbert's Obituary
Funeral services for Rev. Clayton Andrew Gilbert, age 88, formerly of Alexander City, will be Friday, May 21, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Alexander City. Rev. Dr. Gerald Hallmark and Rev. Paul Miller will officiate. Burial will follow in the Alexander City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at First Baptist Church.\r\n\r\nBro. Clayton died peacefully on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the Bethany House in Auburn. He was born on November 28, 1921 in Walker County to Orville May Gilbert and Annie Wylie Gilbert. Bro. Clayton was a Baptist minister for nearly 60 years. After graduating from Howard College (Samford University) and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he pastored churches in Irvington, KY, Maplesville, AL, Tuscaloosa, AL, Alexander City, AL and Camp Hill, AL. He also served as the Royal Ambassador Director for the Alabama State Board of Missions, and worked for the Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. He loved ministering to others and did so until the very end. He truly loved people and enjoyed visiting. He always wanted to meet the needs of others and did so with a servant’s heart. He was very active in the Alexander City community. He was a member of the Lions Club, R.S.V.P., Chamber of Commerce, Chaplain for The Lighthouse of Tallapoosa County, and was awarded Man of The Year by the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce in 1986.\r\n\r\nHe is survived by his daughter, Nancy Clay (Ed) Corbitt of Tuskegee; son, John Bob (Virginia) Gilbert of Atlanta; grandsons, Thomas (Katie) Corbitt of Auburn, Clay (Megan) Corbitt of Union Springs, John (Andrea) Corbitt of Auburn and James Gilbert of Tuscaloosa; great-grandchildren, Brooke Corbitt, Edward Corbitt and Ally Corbitt.\r\n\r\nHe was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Scott (Scottie) Sutherland Gilbert and their daughter, Mary Anna Gilbert.\r\n\r\nThe family wishes to thank the caring staff at Camellia Place, Bethany House, and East Alabama Hospice.
