Mr. Bill O' Neal Gunn passed away Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Arbor Springs Rehab in Opelika after an extended stay at EAMC. He was born June 21, 1935, to George O'Neal & Nancy Jane Gunn of Reeltown, Alabama. The 1929 Reeltown High School building was only 12 years old when Bill and his first-grade classmates posed barefoot for a class photo on the front steps. Bill was quarterback of one of the first football teams at Reeltown High School. As a Senior, on March 21, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Sue Meadows. They both worked in sewing plants early in their marriage. Peggy sewed and Bill repaired the machines.
Bill enlisted in the Alabama National Guard in 1957. He started out with the 731st Headquarters in Tallassee & ended his career working in Alabama National Guard Headquarters in Montgomery as a Master Sergeant.
As a talented marksman, he served on a competition shooting team through the Guard. He served for a total of 38 years. During most of those years, he was full-time with the Guard plus farmed cattle, cotton, corn, & soybeans part-time.
Bill & Peggy had four children who they raised in Reeltown Baptist Church to know the Lord from an early age. Bill was an ordained deacon, sang in the choir & held many leadership positions over the 5 decades they were members. After retirement, he & Peggy moved to Lake Martin & were faithful members of FBC Alexander City for almost 20 years. He taught a Veteran's Sunday School class at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home as an extension of their church.
Bill loved to fish on Lake Martin as well as deep sea fish in The Gulf with his family & friends. He took up golf after moving to Lake Martin. Although he hunted deer, bird hunting was his all-time favorite.
He was a self-taught mechanic who enjoyed antique cars. Late in life, he bought a Jeepster like the one they dated in.
He took Peggy on long trips with their Goldwing motorcycle. Later, they went from Key West Florida to Alaska in their RV.
He is survived by his sons, Mike (Jane) Gunn, Allen (Faith Ann) Gunn, Stacey (Dana) Gunn; daughter, Melinda (James) Poole; grandchildren, Wes (Amanda) Gunn, Brandi Hunter, Alison Lubin, April Weldon, Joshua (Logan) Poole, Lance (Shelby) Gunn, Luke (Brittney) Gunn, Caleb (Kelli) Poole, Lindsey (Taylor) Wesson and step-grandchildren, Summer (Jay) Darnell and Stephanie Bedsole. His many great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandson knew the love & support of Bill.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Peggy Sue Meadows Gunn; parents; grandson, Russell Gunn; great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Gunn, and sisters, Blondene Sterud and Betty Jean Wells.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions at your local Baptist Church or to medical missions in Malawi, Africa, that the family supported for over 20 years through online giving at https://www.chikondihealth.org.
