Allen Russell Stearns, known fondly as Allen to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, in Panama City, Florida. Born on November 7, 1936, in the small town of Central, Alabama to George Stearns and Dovie Lula Stearns, Allen was the cherished youngest sibling among six children. His early years were spent in the heart of Alabama, moving between Alexander City, Seman, and Equality, where he cultivated a lifetime of treasured memories, including the thrill of riding in the backseat of Hank Williams's Cadillac and witnessing the country music legend perform live in Montgomery at the tender age of thirteen.
Allen dedicated 28 years of service to the United States Air Force, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1984. Throughout his distinguished military career, he was honored with eight service medals, a testament to his commitment and patriotism. His first tour in Germany found him working in intelligence, a role he often described as the most interesting job he ever held. Allen's expertise in computer maintenance subsequently led him to various Air Force Bases around the globe, enriching his life with diverse experiences and cultures.
Following his retirement from the military, Allen's adventurous spirit took him to Saudi Arabia, where he spent three years installing a Missile Control System. Eventually, he chose to settle down in the serene surroundings of Deer Point Lake in Panama City, Florida, a place he lovingly referred to as his little piece of happiness.
Allen's passions were as rich and varied as his life experiences. He was an avid fan of old country music, finding joy in the tunes that echoed his own roots. An enthusiast of the outdoors, he relished in fishing, boating, and embracing the beauty of nature. Allen also enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Las Vegas, where he experienced the excitement of the city. Above all, he cherished the moments spent with his family and friends, sharing laughter and creating lasting memories.
Allen was a proud American who lived life to the fullest, touching the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy will be remembered as one of joy, service, and an unwavering love for his country and those around him. His departure leaves behind a void that will be deeply felt, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
He is survived by his daughters, Marilyn (Geoffrey) Harrelson and Dovie (Matt) Chaney; son, Frank (Monica) Stearns; step-sons, Keith (Angela) Hudson and Clay (Carla) Hudson; grandchildren, Allen Chaney, Marilyn Chaney, Elizabeth (James) Harader, Juliet Stearns, Jared Stearns, and Russell Schuller; step-grandchildren, Caleb Hudson and Grace Hudson; sisters, Myrtle (Doug) Smith and Bessi (Charles) Thompson; and brothers, Morris Stearns, James Stearns, and Joe (Mary) Stearns.
